Kapitalist İbadet, seccade üzeri tek kanal video yerleştirme, 110x67 cm, 2+1 AP, 2018

 

Modern yaşamda adeta bir ibadet haline gelmiş olan AVM tavafları, isminin önerdiği alış-veriş yapma eyleminden uzaklaşarak, bireylerin boğucu yaşamlarından kaçmak ve ‘insan görmek’ için yaptıkları bir deneyime dönüşmektedir. AVM’lerin cctv’li panoptikonumsu yapılarının, kapitalist düzenin kendini devamlı olarak tasdikleten ve bireyleri tekdüzeleştiren kanonlarından olduğu da su götürmez bir gerçektir.

 

Bir AVM’nin içinde dolaşan insanların videosunun aynalanmış tekrarlarından oluşan videonun, bir seccadeye yansıtılmasıyla oluşan Kapitalist İbadet, vahşi kapitalizmin yaşandığı Ortadoğu coğrafyalarındaki kapital ve mubah olanın arasındaki dinamiği sorgular.

Roaming around as if circumambulating in a mall has become  a regular worshipping practice for most modern day people. The act is not even for buying or window shopping anymore, it is rather  a thing for individuals to escape from their everyday life and to socialize to gaze at new people. There is no doubt that these socializing structures, which are usually shaped like a panopticon constantly surveying their habitants with CCTVs, are one of the main pedestals of capitalism that is utilized in order to to re-approve capitalism itself and to homogenize people.

 

Capitalist Worship, is constructed by projecting a mirrored image of people roaming in a mall on to the white surface of a praying rug. The installation investigates the dynamics between capital and the mubah* notion of Islam within the Middle East regions that are currently in the throes of one of  the wildest forms capitalism. 

 

*Mubah things are the allowed, licit things to do in Islam. However, in daily life it is often used to explain situations that are normally accepted  as bad, but within certain circumstances they are allowed.
